Whole Mushrooms for Dogs & Cats

What the science says

PetShrooms 7 gives your dog or cat seven organic mushrooms, whole and unextracted: fruiting body, mycelium and spores together. It supports immune and gut health, energy, joint function, mobility and overall vitality.

Here is why we made it that way, what each mushroom brings, and an honest look at how much research exists in pets so far.

Why whole mushroom for pets?

Life Force 7 is a concentrated fruiting-body extract made for people. PetShrooms 7 takes a different route on purpose, because a pet's daily support starts in the gut.

It keeps the fibre

Mushroom cell walls are rich in beta-glucans and other fibres that dogs and cats don't fully digest. These travel to the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment them into short-chain fatty acids that help nourish the gut lining.

In a 12-week placebo-controlled study, healthy adult dogs given a turkey tail, reishi and lion's mane blend (with bovine colostrum) had higher short-chain fatty acid levels than dogs on placebo (Wang et al., 2026).

Whole particles meet the immune system where it works

A large share of the body's immune cells sit in the gut lining. Lab research found that Dectin-1, a key immune receptor for beta-glucans, is switched on by whole beta-glucan particles but not by dissolved ones (Goodridge et al., Nature, 2011).

That work was done in cells, not pets, but it is one reason we keep the mushroom whole.

Fruiting body, mycelium and spores

The fruiting body (the cap and stem) is where beta-glucans and triterpenes are most concentrated. The mycelium (the root-like network) adds its own fibres and compounds. The spores, which the mushroom releases to reproduce, are included too.

Ours grow on hardwood, the way they do in nature, not on grain.

Gentle amounts, sized for small bodies

PetShrooms 7 is a light daily sprinkle on food, not a concentrated extract.

Give 1 scoop a day for pets under 25 lb, up to 4 scoops for pets over 75 lb, and start with half for the first week.

The 7 mushrooms, and what research in pets shows so far

Two of the seven have been studied on their own in healthy dogs, two more as part of blends, and three so far only in lab, rodent or human research.

  • Studied alone in dogs
  • Studied in a dog blend
  • Not yet studied in pets

Lion's Mane

Hericenones and erinacines, studied for brain and nerve support

Studied alone in dogs

In 18 senior dogs, 16 weeks of lion's mane in their food shifted the mix of gut bacteria at the higher amount, while overall diversity stayed stable (Cho et al., 2022).

Reishi

Triterpenes and beta-glucans; valued for calm and immune balance

Studied alone in dogs

Adult beagles given the highest amount showed a stronger antibody response to their rabies vaccine, with no change to digestion, gut bacteria or coat (Kayser et al., 2024).

Turkey Tail

Beta-glucan compounds (PSK and PSP); immune and gut support

Studied in a dog blend

Taken with reishi and lion's mane for 12 weeks, it was well tolerated by healthy dogs (Wang et al., 2026).

Shiitake

Lentinan, a beta-glucan

Studied in a dog blend

As 1% of a supplement with bromelain and quercetin, it was linked to more Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in dogs after 28 days (Atuahene et al., 2024).

Cordyceps

Cordycepin; traditionally used for energy and stamina

Not yet studied in pets

Lab, rodent and human research so far.

Chaga

Melanin and polyphenol antioxidants; grows on birch

Not yet studied in pets

Lab research so far.

Maitake

Beta-glucans (D-fraction); traditionally used for metabolic balance

Not yet studied in pets

Lab, rodent and human research so far.

And cats?

Cat research is thinner still. In the one controlled cat study we found, 20 healthy adult cats took a mushroom-extract blend for 12 weeks; stool quality and blood chemistry stayed normal, with small shifts in gut bacteria (Broughton et al., 2026).

We would rather show you where the science stands than promise more than it shows. Research in pets is growing, and we will update this page as new studies are published.

Safety first

Keep pets away from wild mushrooms

Grocery-store mushrooms carry little risk, but some wild mushrooms can be deadly to dogs and cats, and they are very hard to tell apart (ASPCA Poison Control). If your pet eats one, call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661 right away.

Start low

Give half the usual PetShrooms 7 serving for the first week, then build up.

Ask your vet first

If your pet is pregnant or nursing, takes medication, or has an ongoing gut or immune condition. In one report, two dogs with inflammatory bowel disease reacted to a yeast beta-glucan supplement (Amaral et al.).

Watch the first two weeks

If vomiting, loose stools or itching don't settle, stop and call your vet.
